How to Improve Indoor Air Quality in Spring

If you suffer from seasonal allergies, it’s likely that while spring brings excitement, it also brings dread. A stuffy nose, difficulty breathing, lack of sleep - these are just a few of the symptoms caused by seasonal allergies. Learn how to improve indoor air quality in your Marietta home and give allergy symptoms the boot.

Before you resort to locking yourself in your room to avoid seasonal triggers, do what you can to improve indoor air quality:

  • Avoid allergy triggers. If it’s windy, stay inside. Windy days spread allergens around. The best time to head outdoors is after it’s rained.
  • Don’t participate in activities where you’ll expose yourself to allergens, like mowing the lawn or gardening.
  • Change your clothes after spending time outside. Your clothes will bring allergens indoors, and spread them around your house as you go about your daily activities.
  • Never dry laundry outside. It will quickly pick up allergens.
  • Don’t leave windows and doors open, especially when allergy (like pollen) counts are particularly high.
  • Use air conditioning. It helps to purify the air, as A/Cs use an air filter to remove impurities from the air before it enters your home.
  • Install high-efficiency air filters in the air conditioner if you can. Consult an expert first, however, as you can damage an air conditioner by running it with an air filter that’s too densely woven. You can also check the owner’s manual, as it will outline the acceptable minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) air filters you can use with the system.
  • Vacuum and dust indoors regularly to keep allergens to a minimum.
  • Install an air-cleaning system in your home. You can choose a whole-house air purification system that specifically targets the allergens that are troublesome for you, such as particles, pollen, molds, etc.
