Noises Your AC Shouldn’t Be Making

There are a few noises you never want to hear in your house — a crash when your child is in the other room, the dog barking at the doro, and, in Atlanta, the sports announcer saying a team scored against the Georgia Bulldogs.

While all those sounds are cause for concern, there are a few others that should worry you, like strange noises coming from your AC unit. If something sounds out of the ordinary, you should probably have it looked at and seek out the necessary air conditioning repairs.

More likely than not, this is a sign that you have an issue with the fan in your outdoor condenser unit. There may be something blocking the fan and causing a banging noise, or it may have come loose and started wobbling around in the unit.

If you ignore this problem, it will only get worse and could do some serious damage to your unit, so it’s best to have the fan checked and fixed.

If you hear clicking but your AC won’t start, you probably have an electrical problem on your hands and will need to have it repaired by an electrician in order to get your unit running. (Remember, electrical work should always only be handled by a professional.)

If there’s a clicking noise while the unit’s running, there may be a small obstruction in it. Luckily for you, the solution is often to simply find and remove the debris.

Think of this noise as a “nails on a chalkboard” type of sound. Screeching sounds usually last for as long as the unit is running, and are often the result of metal rubbing against metal. Typically, this is a sign that the bearing on your fan motor is too worn down, meaning you’ll need to replace it.

Continuing to run your AC with this issue can lead to further damage, so you should call your HVAC tech right away if you’re hearing this sound.

Any time a machine is making a scream-like noise, you should have it checked immediately. A screaming sound from your AC is a tell-tale sign that there is a pressure buildup in your system — which can be very dangerous if not dealt with right away.

It’s safest to shut off your unit and call a professional for help.
