4 Tips for Finishing Attic Spaces
Finishing attic spaces can be a great project, but while your dreams of a clean, bright, finished space are surely driving the remodel, there are a few factors to consider before moving full steam ahead. Finishing the attic provides a host of benefits. Primarily, it opens up more living space in your Buford home and gives you the chance to dream big dreams about its design. But make sure to talk to your contractor about the critical systems that need to be designed early on in the process to successfully complete the project.
Here’s what you need to make sure you do when remodeling the attic:
- Ensure adequate ventilation: This is a good time to first ensure that the attic has sufficient ventilation. It usually comes in the form of ridge and soffit vents at the peak and ridge of the roof. When the space is unfinished, air moves safely and freely through the vents. But if you’re going to drywall the space, the contractor needs to preserve air circulation through the vents.
- Protect the wiring: If the attic doesn’t have existing electrical access, you’ll need to hire an electrician to run electrical into the space. You’ll need a few outlets, lights and wiring for HVAC, too. Existing electrical wires need to be preserved and routed to the right places during construction. It’s best to have an electrician work on the wiring prior to building out the walls and floors, so she can easily run wires under floors and behind walls and ceilings.
- Run plumbing and HVAC: If your attic finishing plans include a bathroom, run the plumbing components early on in the project. It’s also helpful to be able to tuck heating and cooling ducts under floors and behind walls before constructing the walls.
- Install windows: Installing a few windows or dormers lets natural light enhance the space, making the attic seem brighter and more open. These are worth the extra expense.
