How to Get the Most Bang for Your Buck in a Bathroom Remodel

The bathroom-a small space that is used daily countless numbers of times. It's also one of the rooms that can add a great amount of value to your home when updated. Of course an unsightly bathroom can affect you like nails on a chalkboard, but is it within your time and budget to remodel this room? How do you get the most bang for your Buck when starting this home project?
There are generally three types of bathroom remodels:
1) The Face Lift: This remodel generally does not involve taking down or adding any walls, cabinets, or any major plumbing changes. This type of remodel, while least expensive, can give your bathroom a fresh look with minimal cost. Such things as adding fresh paint, changing your faucets and shower fixtures, adding new lighting, adding an exhaust fan, changing towel bars, changing to a low flow toilet, and even adding a tile backsplash are all examples of giving your bathroom a little "face lift." Although these changes can make a dramatic change to the look of your room, and seem to be easily accomplished; it is always recommended to hire a licensed plumber and electrician to assure proper installation of plumbing and electrical fixtures.

2) The Mid-Range Remodel: This remodel also does not involve changing the general shape of your room but does involve a little more time, effort and funds. If you are wanting to replace the acrylic tub/shower to tile, change cabinetry and sinks, add a linen closet or change the flooring; these are all examples of a mid-range remodel. While much of the work can be done with your own elbow grease, purchasing the supplies necessary for these types of changes can thin your wallet. When replacing any plumbing it is recommended to spend the extra funds on a licensed professional. Leaks are disastrous!

3) The Big Deal: This is the type of remodel you see on DIY home shows. The room starts as an outdated bathroom, is stripped to nothing but the walls and sometimes studs, and ends up looking as a work of art. This type of remodel requires for you to generally hire most of the work out and is the most expensive. Are you wanting a new jetted tub, steam shower, heated towel racks or a new bidet? When it comes to changing the layout of electrical fixtures/outlets, plumbing, HVAC vents and any structural changes, it is important to always consult with the professionals. Little changes to you may have lasting negative effects and may even pose hazards.
How do you get the most bang for your buck when remodeling a bathroom? If you are changing your paint color, you can always save money by checking with your hardware store for "off" paint colors. These are generally full gallons of paint that people returned because they bought the wrong color. Generally bathrooms are smaller than an average sized room. You might be able to get away with a single gallon of paint.
The "shabby chic" look is popular and you can find a number of ways to update your cabinets using different types of painting techniques, instead of purchasing new ones. You can also find a number of inexpensive ways to store your towels and necessities, such as baskets and shelves, in lieu of purchasing additional cabinetry.
Measure out the amount needed for a tile backsplash and/or floor. Don't forget to allow at least 15% for mistakes or cuts. Since bathrooms are generally smaller spaces, you can often find hardware stores who are selling remnants of larger lots of tile at a discount. For small spaces, you might just find a great deal!
If you are replacing your toilet, consider low flow models. Although they may cost a bit more on the front end; you will save almost half the water used per flush. These savings add up over time and can reduce your utility costs.
Most importantly, make sure to know your limitations. It is always wise to hire professionals for areas of the remodel that you are not comfortable with. The problems that can occur from a broken pipe, or faulty electrical outlet can pose to be hazardous and expensive to repair.
